How Dusky handles your data
Privacy is core to Dusky. Here's exactly what happens with your data.
The short version
- Audio & screen: Processed for AI assistance, not stored on our servers
- Transcripts & AI responses: Stored on your device only
- Server storage: No interview content. We keep your account record, nothing from the interview itself.
- Delete anytime: Signing out wipes your local data; you can also delete the data folder
What is captured
Audio from your microphone
When you start a session, Dusky captures audio from your selected microphone. This is used for real-time transcription of your voice.
System audio
Dusky captures system audio to transcribe the interviewer's voice coming through your speakers or headphones.
Screen content
Dusky captures screen content to provide context-aware suggestions. Screenshots are sent to the AI for processing and are not stored on our servers.
Transcribed text
The transcription of what's said during your interview. This includes both you and your interviewer (if audible).
AI-generated suggestions
The suggestions and prompts that Dusky generates based on the conversation context.
What is NOT captured
How data flows
Audio streaming
Audio from your microphone and system audio (interviewer's voice) is streamed in real-time to our transcription service over an encrypted connection. It is processed immediately and not stored.
Screen capture
Screen content is captured and sent through our backend to the AI provider for context-aware assistance. Screenshots are processed in real-time and not stored on our servers.
AI processing
Transcribed text and screen context are sent to our backend, which selects the model and forwards the request to the AI provider. This is processed in real-time and not stored by us or retained by the provider for training.
Local storage
Transcripts and AI responses are stored locally on your device for your reference. This data never leaves your machine after the session.
Data retention
| Data type | Where | Retention |
|---|---|---|
| Audio | Transcription service | Not retained (real-time only) |
| Screen captures | AI provider | Not retained (real-time only) |
| Transcripts | Your device only | Until you delete |
| AI responses | Your device only | Until you delete |
| Account data | Our servers | Until account deletion |
How to delete your data
Sign out
Signing out of Dusky wipes your local data: your CV and job description, saved conversations, session history, and any screenshots still on disk.
Delete app data folder
For complete removal, delete the Dusky data folder:
- macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Dusky
- Windows: %APPDATA%\Dusky
Delete account
Email [email protected] with "Account Deletion Request" to delete your account and all associated data from our servers.
Permissions and why we need them
Microphone
Required for live transcription. We capture audio only when you start a session.
Screen Recording / Capture
Two things need it. It is how we capture the interviewer's voice — their audio arrives as system audio through your speakers, not through your microphone — and it is how we take a screenshot when you ask Dusky to solve what's on screen. Staying out of screen shares is separate and needs no permission at all: that is a window flag Dusky sets on itself.
